1969 AMX data, information, pictures, VIN ID, technical and performance infoThere were not many changes between the 1968 AMX and the 1969 model. A new style dashboard with a speedometer was included, and a new "Big Bad AMX" package.
"Big Bad AMX" For just $34, this option included 3 new colors with body colored bumpers, and a front bumper trim strip. 284 units were produced in orange, 283 in green, and 195 in blue.
The "Go" Package Like the 1968 AMX, 1969 also offered the "Go" package, available on the 343 or 390 engines. This package included power front disc brakes, E70x14 redline tires, Twin Grip rear axle in specific ratios, and Twin racing stripes that went over the hood, roof, and trunk in white or black.
AMX SS 52 Frost White AMX's with 390 engines were delivered to Hurst Performance, Inc. for legalization as drag racers. There are claims that 53 were built, one extra for insurance reasons if one was damaged in transit. There is no real confirmation if 52 or 53 were built. The modifications included a pair of 650 cfm Holley four barrels on an Edelbrock aluminum cross-ram intake, along with new headers and other minor modifications. Rear end gears were 4.44:1. This resulted in a VERY conservative rated 340 bhp, although they really produced 405 to 420 bhp in full racing schemes. Legal modifications later on added even more horse power.
No options were added, to keep the weight down. Unneeded items such as rocker panel trim, front sway bars, and dual horns were removed, and a large metal hood scoop was mounted on the hood. The serial #'s were grouped between A9M397X213560 through A9M397X213613, and the dash plaque numbers went from 12,567 to 12,620. The cars suggested retail price was $5,994, there was no warranty, and AMC specifically warned that the AMX SS was not intended for street use. 1/4 mile times in the 10 second range were not unheard of with the AMX SS.
Collectibility The 1969 AMX SS is the most coveted AMX model ever produced. I have seen prices range from $30,000 for a project or parts car, to $70,000 for a decent model.
Plaque numbers AMX models had a unique marketing gimmick with plaque numbers on the dash. Read more about the plaques here.
