My curiosity peaked last weekend at the 56th Annual Rod and Custom Spectacular in St. Paul, MN. I saw this plaque in the back window of an old 1956 Pontiac, as I also live in Columbia Heights. I saw that the owner does not live in Heights, but I could not find him anywhere around the car to ask more questions. Was this an old car club in the area, or is it still an ongoing car club?
I am finding that Columbia Heights has it's fair share of classic automobiles. Just this morning I saw the rear end of a burnt yellow early 70's muscle car sticking out of a garage on my way to the bus stop, so I could not go down the block to research further. I believe it was an Oldsmobile Cutlass. Within the last year and within 1 block of our house, I have found owners of an old school Volkswagen Beetle, an Edsel, and a late 1970's Ford Thunderbird.
All this now makes me wonder if I have been living in a community full of classic car owners and fans for years now, and never realized it? The old A & W root beer drive-in on 40th has reopened within the last year, and I saw one evening 4 different old school cars there, but again I couldn't stop by to see what it was all about. Bobby & Steve's Auto World on 37th & Central has their yearly classic car show in August, making it even clearer this may be a large classic car community. There are also two classic car clubs that I know of in Heights (one is for Crosley autos), although neither club goes by the name of "Romin' Rods".
If anyone in the area knows of this club, please let me know as I am very curious. I'll have to keep an eye out for this car during the summer auto shows, I'm sure he will have it at one if not more that I frequent.
