Although the car was not born in America (the first practical automobile is considered to be built in 1885 by Karl Benz in Germany), America has certainly had the greatest influence on the automobile throughout it's life. Henry Ford perfecting the assembly line to mass produce Model T's is at the top of the list, and the release of the Mustang and selling nearly a million units within the first 18 months is another great feat.
