Chrysler Cordoba History and InformationBuilt between 1975 and 1983, the Chrysler Cordoba was Chrysler's entry into the intermediate luxury car market, targeting the Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Ford Thunderbird models. Chrysler had success with the car for the first few years, and demand was more than they could supply. The Cordoba was one of Chrysler's shining moments of the 1970's, when Chrysler was battling to stay out of bankruptcy. The Cordoba was originally planned to be a Plymouth model, but the Plymouth brand during the 1970's was not strong, and the Chrysler brand still had it's “affluent” appeal. Styling did not change much from 1975 through 1977, and modest changes happened in 1978, mainly the headlights being rectangular and stacked on top of each other.
The Cordoba was shrunk in size for the 1980 model year. Along with the smaller size, the standard engine was downgraded to a six cylinder from the previous eight cylinder. Sales started declining in 1978, and nosedived witht he new changes in 1980. The sales downfall was due to many factors, including the new headlight restyling which did not go over well with the public. Further public relation issues with Chrysler also took a toll on sales, mainly their reputation on quality and their financial issues. Furthermore, the rise of gas prices and fuel economy standards also took a toll on sales. 1983 would be the last year for the Cordoba. 1975 through 1977 Cordoba’s are the most highly collected models.
