Hot Rods, or sometimes referred to as street rods, had an enormous affect on the automobile throughout history. It was the precursor to formal racing. California youngsters would "Hop Up" their engines and exhaust, remove all extra parts not essential to the car (even headlights which caused it to be dangerous), and drove out to the salt flats to race. Hot Rod popularity exploded after World War II with service men coming home and wanting speed and adrenaline. Scrap cars and parts could be bought for very cheap, and mechanical knowledge was gained during the war by the service men making hot rods easy to work on by many.
