AMC's last single year performance model was the Hornet SC/360, following in the steps of the SC Rambler and the Rebel Machine, although the Hornet continued on after the model year, unlike the Rambler and Rebel lines. This is considered to be AMC’s last real muscle car. New pollution regulations required lower compression ratios, which started giving AMC’s V8’s an edge. Originally a SC/360 and SC/401 was planned by AMC, but due to the increased insurance costs of muscle cars, they scrapped the idea of the SC/401.
Standard Model
The base Hornet SC/360 was packaged with the 360 V8 from the Javelin AMX, with a two barrel carburetor, single exhaust, and 245 horsepower. Rally stripes, steel wheels, a three speed manual transmission, and reclining seats were also standard.
$199 “Go” Package
This was the real deal! This performance package included the bigger engine, with dual exhaust, a four barrel carburetor, and a functional black hood scoop with working ram air, for a healthy 285 bhp. A handling package, raised letter tires, and an in dash tachometer was also standard. A Hurst shift four speed manual or an automatic transmission was optional, as well as a Twin Grip differential with 3.54:1 or 3.90:1 gears.
Collectibility
Considering only 784 were built, these are some of the hardest to find AMC muscle cars. I have read places that less than 80 are known to exist today. The “Go” package Hornet SC/360’s are the most coveted, but considering less than 80 are still around, either model commands a nice premium.
